The Suwa district of Nagano Prefecture, which surrounds Lake Suwa, is about to enter the full-fledged autumn leaves season. Foliage spots and towns are changing color, and autumn leaves events are also held in various places.
One such example is the “Kouyo Suwa Miyama Tour”.
The term “Miyama” here refers to three temples in the Suwa district: Shoryuji Temple, Onsenji Temple, and Choenji Temple. These three temples are the mountains that Mr. Suwa, who was a palace of Suwa in the Edo period, protected and visited.
These mountains have preserved valuable materials and Buddha statues, and are also known as famous spots for autumn leaves. In the “Kouyo Suwa Miyama Tour”, three temples in the fall foliage season are lit up, and various events are held.
For example, a red seal that will be available only during the “Mt. Suwa Miyama Tour”. Each temple has a different mount and a special red seal for this period. This year’s red seal is different from last year’s tour of Miyama, so even those who have visited in the past can see the new red seal.
On November 8 at Onsenji, there is also an event called “Monster and Shabella Night”. It is an event where everyone can sit in a car and talk with a monk while having tea. You can ask what you can’t usually hear, and feel free to talk to monks.
In addition, there is a project such as “Shakyo lanterns”, in which the lanterns are transformed into lanterns. It is a period where you can not only enjoy the scenery but also feel free to touch the temple culture and the world of Buddhism.
This year’s “Suwa Momiji Miyama Tour” will be held from October 26 to November 10. During the period, the temples will be lit up from 18:00 to 20:30. Of course you can also visit during the day. If you come to Suwa during the autumn leaves season, please drop in!
