Fuji azami – Fuji thistle (Cirsium purpuratum)

A Perennial of the Asteraceae.

This is without doubt the most showy Japanese thistle with huge deeply cut spiny leaves forming a large mound. Above these leaves on thick sturdy stems, large nodding purple/pink scaly flowers are borne from late summer to late autumn. Very attractive to exotic looking butterflies and sure to attract comment from anyone who spots it growing on bare rocky slopes its preferred habitat.
